General Rules
Definitions
The Ortler Sky Trails (hereafter Event) is a mountain running event organised by Ortler Sky Trails (hereafter Organization, Organizers, We, Us or Our) in collaboration with the Municipality of Sulden am Ortler, Ferienregion Ortlergebiet & Bergrettung Sulden. The Organization is registered at Torenmolen 12, Leiden, Netherlands.
The Event consists of several Races, each with their own distance and track. Some rules only apply to the duration of the Race instead of the whole Event.
Participants are all persons who have registered for any of the Event activities.
Spectators refer to guests of the Event who do not participate in any activity.
The Event Crew refers to all staff and volunteers working for the Ortler Sky Trails.
Covid-19
Ortler Sky Trails is an international event and both national and international regulations may change according to the evolution of the pandemic. Borders may close, different countermeasures (f.e. obligatory Covid tests, spread start, no refreshments) may be imposed on the Event, or permission for the Event may be retracted by the local authorities, which all can lead to partial or complete cancellation of the Event or changes to the Rules and course of the Event.
In case of cancellation, We will always strive to find the best solution for all parties involved, and as an Event bound by contracts We cannot guarantee partial or complete reimbursement of your registration. We advise all Participants and Spectators to check travel and accommodation options for insurance and refunding policies.
For our 2020 edition, after we reviewed responses to a questionnaire to our Participants, we offered them the opportunity to transfer their registration to the following edition or get a partial refund. On top of that our Ortler Vertical 2020 has shown that it’s possible to safely organize an event and with Our safety plans we are prepared for different scenarios.
For the latest information on local regulations and news regarding covid, please check the South Tyrol covid information page.

Registration & Timing Service
Registration and timing is done by Wedosport, Via Vittorio Bersezio 2, 10023 Chieri (TO) by order of Ortler Sky Trails.
Registration fees can be found on our website registration page. Handling fees are added by Wedosport according to the means of payment.
Participants are required to provide an active personal email address for official communication.
Registration is bound to the Participant and cannot be transferred to another person.
Cancellation & Refund
Participants who wish to cancel their registration will notify the organisers by sending a message through the provided contact form.
Due to the nature of the Event we cannot guarantee a partial or complete refund when cancelling registration. We review each case individually to look for a suitable solution like providing a voucher of the same value for the next edition.
Registration is bound to the Participant and cannot be transferred to another person.
Should the race be cancelled or interrupted for atmospheric reasons, or for any other reason beyond our control, the Participant cannot claim a refund or compensation in any form. The tracker deposit paid during registration will then be refunded through the same means of payment used during registration.
Medical Certificate
For safety reasons we require a valid medical certificate less than 1 year old that declares no contraindications to high intensity exercise at high altitude which can be uploaded to your Wedosport account throughout the year.
Participants who decide to present the certificate at the race desk when collecting their bib number take a risk of not being able to participate if the certificate is not valid.
The Participant agrees to take responsibility and not enter the race when any such contraindication occurs before the start of the race.
Participants of a previous edition of the Event less than 3 years ago only need doctor approval without further testing.
Participants of Italian nationality are allowed to use an official medical certificate of fitness for light athletics issued by a recognised sports doctor.
Participants from outside of Italy must present the medical certificate stating fitness to participate in amateur sport as provided on our registration page. As indicated on the certificate, requirements may vary depending on the track distance.
Track Changes
The tracks have been prepared in collaboration with the Sulden Mountain Rescue. Although ultimate care has been applied to provide the most accurate maps and guidance, the Organization has to follow the most recent advice regarding weather and mountain conditions. This can result in a last minute change of track, or complete cancellation of a specific race or the entire Event without any form of refund or compensation to the participants.
All track changes are made with preservation of altimeters, distance and ITRA score to the highest practical extent in mind.
A GPX file of the race track will be provided to the Participants leading up to the Event by email. A last track check will be done in collaboration with the Sulden Mountain Rescue the day before the start of the race. If any changes to the track should occur before or during the Event, a new GPX download will be provided as soon as possible.
Responsibility & Liability
At the moment of Registration each Participant declares to enter the Event at their own risk and to be responsible for their own safety.
Participants are advised to check if their insurance covers medical costs (including helicopter evacuation) and damage to equipment.
The Organization is not liable for loss or damage to personal equipment belonging to the Participants.
The Organization is not liable and does not accept any liability for any damages, by whatever name or nature, suffered by a Participant incurred during the Event, unless the damage is a direct consequence of deliberate intent or gross negligence on the part of the Organizer.
Mandatory Equipment
Participants are required to carry mandatory equipment to ensure their health and safety during the race. The Races are designed to run without the use of alpine equipment.
Equipment checks will be carried out before the start of the Race and may be carried out during the Race by Event Crew. During the Race Event Crew will help the Participant to unpack and repack to avoid time loss. Participants who don’t carry all mandatory equipment can be ordered to abandoning the Race.
Participants cannot exchange equipment with Spectators during the length of the Race.
Program
Our program is indicative, non binding, and subject to change. Participants and guests are required to check the program page before the event to inform themselves of the latest situation.
Participants will be informed of any changes through the email address provided during the registration process, so it is important to provide a correct active email address as required for registration.
During the Event
Venue Location & Facilities
Participants have the possibility to leave a bag at the Start/Arrival station. The bags will be placed in a separate, guarded room. Do not place valuable items in the bags. The Organization does not take any liability for theft, loss of or damage to bags or their contents.
Track Signage
All tracks are marked with yellow arrows or yellow chalk spray. Reflective tape is added to arrows at the last sections of the race to enhance visibility for finishers in the dark.
Please bear in mind that chalk spray washes off after rainfall intentionally. This makes it ideal from an ecological standpoint, but track signage may be reduced in case of bad weather. Due to environmental restrictions in the Stelvio National Park, we can only use limited physical signage. Running without a GPX-track is therefore strongly discouraged.
Because of potential safety issues, removing or wrongly repositioning race signs by Participants or related Spectators in any way is punishable by law. In addition it can result in immediate disqualification of the related Participant.
Refreshment Posts
Food and drinks provided at each refreshment post must be consumed at location. Participants are required to bring their own cups.
Random equipment checks can be carried out by Event Crew at Refreshment posts. In this case Participants will be asked to remove their backpack at arrival. Event Crew will help the Participant to unpack and repack to avoid time loss.
When leaving a Refreshment Post, Participants must have sufficient liquid to meet the mandatory minimum as stated in the equipment list.
BIB Numbers
Timing is done by means of a disposable chip placed on the bib. Finishers can keep the bib as a nice souvenir of a beautiful day.
Participants are required to fill in the medical safety section on the backside of the bib.
All refreshment posts, time barriers and medical support points are indicated on the height profile on the front of the bib.
Participants arriving after closure of the time barrier will have to discontinue the race and hand over their bib number and GPS tracker to the head of the refreshment post race crew.
Checkpoints & Time Barriers
Participants arriving after closure of the time barrier will have to discontinue the race and hand over their bib number and GPS tracker to the head of the refreshment post race crew.
Time barriers are indicated on the height profile on the front of the bib and can be found on the track pages on our Website.
GPS Tracking
Participants of the SUT, OSM and OGT receive a GPS tracker and tracker instructions when collecting their bib number. This tracker has to be returned to the race desk after finishing or abandoning the race.
The tracker deposit paid during registration will be refunded in the week following the race, or after cancellation through the same means of payment used during registration. Loss or damage of the GPS tracker will be charged to the participant.
With the GPS tracker your progress can be followed online via a link which will be provided before the race.
Correct functioning of your tracker is of paramount importance to your safety. Participants need to make sure it is turned on during the complete Race and is functioning well. Prolonged inactivity during the Race will prompt a warning to the Organizers. In case of problems before the start of the race, please contact the Timing Service Desk, otherwise notify the Race Desk.
Medical Precautions
Participants can only enter the Event if they have fulfilled all of the Conditions of Participation as described in the corresponding rule.
By participating in the event, Participants grant the right to the Organization and its medical staff to provide medical treatment in an emergency.
Participants agree to comply with Event Crew or Medical Staff when ordered to perform a basic check during the race to test the physical and mental fitness to complete the race. Participants who show medical contraindications can be pulled from the race.
The Sulden Mountain Rescue and Race Volunteers will be positioned along the race track’s critical points. Medical aid will be available at fixed locations which will be announced closer to the Event date. All refreshment posts carry a First Aid kit. At the Tennis Hall Medical Staff will be present.
Participants are responsible for their own medical insurance. The Organization is not liable for expenses incurred under any medical treatment offered in an emergency. Evacuation by helicopter in case of emergency will be charged to the Participants so they should make sure this is covered by their insurance.
Safety Precautions
Ortler Sky Trails is one of the highest Alpine trail running events. Running in the mountains is a dance between Eros & Thanatos. We can easily be enchanted by its beauty, but we should always be aware of the risks involved. Even the most experienced athletes can have accidents with lethal consequences. In this section Participants can find an extensive non-exhaustive list of safety precautions and race conditions.
Participants are required to familiarize themselves with the physical difficulty and risks of the race and the forces of nature involved.
Participants can only enter the Event if they have fulfilled all of the Conditions of Participation as described in the corresponding rule.
Mandatory Safety Briefing
The day before the race all Participants are required to familiarize themselves with the Mandatory Safety Briefing digital presentation created by the Organization in collaboration with the Sulden Mountain Rescue. This briefing will emphasize some key aspects about the latest terrain and weather conditions.
More information will be disclosed closer to the Event date.
Personal Conditions
- Falling of a mountain can cause serious injury and result in death.
- Fatigue and exhaustion can cause loss of balance and make a Participant more susceptible to stumbling or falling.
- Exposed mountainsides along the track can cause vertigo and make a Participant more susceptible to stumbling or falling.
- Participants are strongly discouraged to wear headphones, earphones or similar devices while running above the treeline. Hearing rockfall can save your life, hearing a cry for help can save another’s life. Covering your ears can prove fatal in the mountains.
Sunrise and Sunset
Stelvio Ultra Trail participants start before sunrise (5:00) and can finish after sunset (21:45). As a result normal temperatures can range from 5°C to 25°C with varying humidity throughout the day without shelter from weather.
Running in the dark decreases visibility of obstacles like tree roots, branches and rocks, pits and bumps on the trail drastically. Participants need to be familiar with running in the woods in the dark. Keep in mind that the sun will be blocked by the mountains approximately 1 hour after true sunrise and 1 hour before true sunset. The dense woods will also block a lot of light.
Terrain Conditions
- Most of the track lies above the treeline. This creates excellent views, but also means there is no cover from weather conditions like sun, wind, rain, storm and the soil is less firm.
- Below the treeline you will run through dense forests with branches, roots and rocks on the trail.
- Heavy rainfall before and during the event can cause landslides and uprooting of trees.
- All tracks apart from the Ortler Vertical and Kids Run cross the glacier between Schaubach and Langenstein. The glacier is safe to cross and can be covered with snow, rocks and ice depending on the weather. Slipping on ice and falling on rocks is not good for your health.
- Rainfall can create mud along the track. Sliding on mud can result in falling.
- Rockfall can never be excluded on a mountain. Rocks falling on your head are not good for health.
- Loose rubble and debris from rock slides on steep parts can cause more slides and rockfall. Keep your distance and pay special attention to Participants higher up who may cause rockfall or slide down.
Weather Conditions
- Participants are required to carry the mandatory equipment in order to be prepared for all weather conditions at high altitude.
- Although it is very unlikely to snow during the event, late snowfall can leave snow patches at high altitude. On steep parts, this may cause you to slide.
- Running on the glacier in the sun can be warm because of reflected sunlight, but when the sun hides behind the clouds it can become freezing in a matter of minutes.
- Running at almost 3000m of altitude in the burning sun can be scalding hot, but in the shade and wind it can become very cold.
- Storms can gather quickly in the unpredictable mountain weather, so keep an eye on the clouds during the race. If storm clouds approach, rush away from open mountainsides to the nearest Refreshment Post or shelter in both directions of the track for safety. Mountain Rescue will close the Refreshment Posts and all Participants will have to discontinue the Race until weather has passed. In this case, please keep the Race Desk phone number open for emergencies only. Unfortunately death by lightning is a real possibility and is not unprecedented in the mountains.
Safety Instructions for Participants
- Pay attention when crossing the road or running on the road.
- In case of reasonable doubt about Participants’ safety the Organization will try to contact the Participants. During the whole length of the Race all Participants are required to answer their phone as soon as safely possible when contacted by the Organization. Participants are required to check their phone health at every Refreshment Post and inform the Event Crew in case of problems. Repeated failure to gain contact with the Participant during the Race may prompt the Organization or Mountain Rescue to send a rescue team by helicopter which will be charged to the Participant. Participants are advised to check with their insurance for covering these costs.
- Participants are required to fill in the medical safety section on the backside of the bib number.
- Participants are required to help other Participants in need of medical attention and notify Emergency Services and the Organization in case of emergency. They can only leave the Participant with direct approval of the Medical Staff present or in their absence the Organization’s approval. Neglecting this obligation will lead to disqualification.
- Thread carefully and keep distance from other Participants when running on steep sections of rock debris to avoid rockfall which can injure other Participants or yourself.
- Participants who wish to carry poles have to make sure that the end points are covered and not protruding when not using the poles to prevent accidents. Keep distance from Participants with poles, especially in uphill sections.
- Do not overtake other Participants on steep, unstable or small sections of the track.
- Reckless behaviour by a Participant which can endanger another participant may lead to disqualification.
- Participants have to inform their friends and family members who will be present during the event of the rules they need to comply with.
Abandonment, quitting, termination
Participants who decide to discontinue the Race, have to hand over their bib number and GPS tracker to the head of the refreshment post race crew.
They can be picked up by a shuttle bus at specific places which will be communicated closer to the Event date.
Participants who discontinue the race and return by their own means must inform the Race Desk. The tracking device should not be turned off, but instead be returned to the Race Desk.
Environment
Stelvio National Park is home to an abundance of plant and animal life. We are all guests in this vulnerable region and must abide by strict environmental rules to protect it for future generations.
- Littering by Participants and related Spectators is punishable by law and can lead to disqualification of the related Participant. Waste bins are available at each refreshment post.
- Local flora is very vulnerable to erosion, therefore Participants and Spectators should stay on the official tracks.
- Local fauna and wildlife are protected by law. Participants and Spectators should always keep their distance and avoid confrontations of any kind.
- The Organization does not provide single use plastic cups at any location. Participants are required to use their own reusable cup or bottle at refreshment posts.
